حَشْد is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the triliteral root ح-ش-د (ḥ-sh-d), whose verb حَشَدَ means to gather people, rally them, or muster them for a common purpose. The root belongs to native Arabic vocabulary and has no borrowed origin. From this base sense of mustering came both the abstract meaning of mobilization and the concrete meaning of the crowd that results from it.
