The root ف ل ح carries the basic sense of tilling soil and making it yield a harvest. The farmer, fallāḥ, is the one who works the land for a productive result. Form IV, aflaḥa, extends this image from the field to any effort: to bring about a good outcome, to succeed. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root behind this word.
