Etymology

Tawallī is the verbal noun of the Form V verb tawallā, built on the triliteral root w-l-y. The root carries the core sense of closeness and guardianship, the idea of standing near someone or something and taking responsibility for it. From this root Arabic also derives walī (guardian, patron), wilāya (governorship, jurisdiction), and mawlā (lord, client). Tawallī specifically names the act of stepping into that role of authority or custodianship.
