أَكَنّ comes from the Semitic root ك-ن-ن, which carries the sense of covering or sheltering something from view. Form I, كَنَّ, means to cover or shelter, while the causative Form IV, أَكَنَّ, shifts the sense to keeping a feeling hidden inside oneself. The word appears in the Quran to describe emotions that a person conceals rather than declares. It has no Indo-European origin, since Arabic is a Semitic language.
