The verb comes from the Semitic root kh-w-d (خ-و-ض), whose core sense is wading or churning through water. Classical Arabic extended this literal image to speech and conflict: a person who wades into a river also wades into a fight, a debate, or a hard experience. The word is a hollow (middle-weak) verb, so the root's waw surfaces as a long alif in the past tense.
