Etymology

عِيادَة comes from the Arabic root ع-و-د, which carries the core idea of returning or repeating. From this root came the verb عاد يعود, one sense of which means to visit a sick person, literally to return to check on them. عِيادَة is the verbal noun for that specific sense of visiting, and over time it narrowed to name the place where such visits happen: a doctor's clinic.
