Etymology

حِراسَة comes from the Arabic triliteral root ح ر س (ḥ-r-s), which carries the sense of watching over and protecting. The word itself is a maṣdar, a verbal noun built on the فِعالة pattern that Arabic often uses for occupations and sustained activities, such as كِتابة (writing) or زِراعة (farming). This root is native Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
