Etymology
عَدا comes from the Semitic root ع-د-و, whose core sense is crossing or going beyond. From it Arabic builds the idea of running, since a runner covers ground, and of transgression, since an aggressor oversteps a limit. The same root yields عَدُوّ, the enemy who crosses against you, and عُدْوان, aggression. There is no Indo-European tie; the cognates are other Semitic verbs of passing.
