Etymology
نَوَوِيّ is a relational adjective built from نَوَاة (nawāh), meaning nucleus, kernel, or fruit pit, plus the nisba ending ـِيّ. The root ن-و-ي carries the idea of a hard core at the center of something. The nuclear sense is a twentieth-century coinage, made to carry the physics of the atomic nucleus into Arabic. The same word also names the nucleic in الحمض النووي, nucleic acid, the standard Arabic term for DNA.
