Etymology
حِصان comes from the Semitic root ح-ص-ن, meaning to protect, fortify, or guard. Classical lexicographers explain that the stallion took this name because its bloodline was carefully guarded and kept for breeding. The same root gives حِصْن, a fortress, and حَصَانة, immunity.
