Etymology
مُعَلِّم is the active participle of عَلَّمَ, the form II verb built on the Semitic root ع ل م (ʿ-l-m), 'to know.' Doubling the middle consonant makes the verb causative, so 'to know' becomes 'to make known,' that is, to teach. A مُعَلِّم is therefore one who makes others know. The same root also gives Arabic عالَم 'world,' whose cognates spread across the Semitic family with the senses 'world' and 'eternity.'
