Etymology

إيجار is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb آجَرَ, which means to let or rent out property to someone. Both trace to the triliteral root ء-ج-ر, which carries the core sense of payment or compensation for a service. The same root gives أجر (ajr), the everyday word for a wage or fee. The word belongs to the Semitic root system, not the Indo-European one, so it has no PIE ancestor.
