Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root q-l-d, whose verb qallada means to imitate or to invest someone with authority, as in placing a collar of office on them. From this root comes the noun taqlīd, meaning tradition or imitation. Adding the nisba suffix -iyy turns the noun into the adjective taqlīdiyy, meaning traditional. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
