Etymology

زَمِيل comes from the triliteral root z-m-l, tied to the verb zāmala, to accompany. The oldest sense was a travel companion, someone who rode alongside or shared the same load on a journey. The meaning later widened to any person who shares your work, study, or rank. The related abstract noun zamāla now also names an academic fellowship.
