Etymology

The word grows from the Semitic root ṣ-ḥ-f, tied to writing on a surface. Classical Ethiopic preserves the verb ṣaḥafa, "to write," and the noun maṣḥaf, "book," which points to a shared South Semitic background. In the Qur'an the plural ṣuḥuf names the scriptures of earlier prophets. The modern sense "newspaper" is a later extension of the older meaning, "a written sheet."
