Etymology

سَحَبَ comes from the Semitic root s-ḥ-b, which holds the core sense of pulling or dragging. Classical Arabic stretched it to clouds, سَحَاب, pictured as masses dragged across the sky. Later usage added the banking sense of drawing out money and the military sense of pulling back troops.
