Etymology

مُقَدَّس is the passive participle of the form II verb قَدَّس, meaning to sanctify or consecrate. Both come from the Semitic root ق-د-س, which carries the sense of holiness, purity, and being set apart. The same root gives القُدْس, the Arabic name for Jerusalem, and runs across the Semitic languages, including Hebrew קָדוֹשׁ (qādōš), holy.
