Etymology

بَرِّيّ is a relative adjective built from the noun بَرّ (barr), 'dry land, open country,' the counterpart of بَحْر (baḥr), 'sea.' The suffix ـِيّ turns the noun into 'pertaining to the land,' and from there into 'wild' for animals and plants that live away from human settlement. The same root gives بَرِّيَّة (barriyya), 'wilderness,' and the adverb بَرّاً (barran), 'by land.'
