Etymology

نال comes from the Semitic root n-y-l, meaning to reach or attain. It is a hollow verb: the middle weak radical yāʼ surfaces as a long ā in the past form nāla but shortens before consonant endings, as in niltu. The verbal noun is nayl, 'attainment.' Do not confuse it with نِيل, the Nile or indigo dye, which is a separate word.
