Etymology
The word grows from the Semitic root n-j-d, which ties together courage, the act of coming to someone's aid, and high ground. Classical Arabic praised the brave man who answered a call and rode to help. The same root names Najd, the central plateau of Arabia. Over time the noun نَجْدَة narrowed to the plain sense of help or rescue.
