The verb comes from the Semitic root ḥ-l-m, which carries the sense of dreaming across the family. Hebrew ḥālam and Aramaic ḥelmā mean the same thing. In Arabic the same root also produced ḥilm, meaning forbearance, a separate line of development from the same three consonants.
