شَهادَة is the verbal noun of the verb شَهِدَ, to witness or to be present. It comes from the Semitic root š-h-d, which links presence, direct observation, and formal testimony. The same root yields شاهِد, a witness, and شَهيد, a martyr, one who bears witness with his life. Aramaic and Syriac carry the root in sāhdā, witness and martyr, which shaped the Christian sense of death as testimony.
