Etymology
أَنَى comes from the triliteral root ء-ن-ي, which carries the sense of a thing reaching its due time or full ripeness. The same root yields إِنًى, a span of time, and أَنَاة, unhurried patience. The verb is well known from the Quran in the clipped form يَأْنِ, which asks whether the moment has finally arrived. Arabic is a Semitic language, so the word has no Indo-European root.
