The word comes from the Semitic root s-d-d, whose core sense is to block, stop up, or make something solid and straight. The same root gives سَدّ (dam, barrier). The Form II verb سَدَّدَ extends this base idea of 'making straight' into 'aiming correctly' and, by further extension, 'settling an account so it is straight,' hence 'paying off a debt.'
