Etymology
سَكَن comes from the Semitic root س-ك-ن (s-k-n), whose core sense is stillness and settling in place. The same root gives Arabic verbs for growing quiet and for taking up residence, so the noun سَكَن can mean both a physical dwelling and the calm of coming to rest. This double sense shows up in the Quran, where prayer is called a سَكَن for the heart.
