Etymology

سَيّارة comes from the Arabic root s-y-r, which means to travel or to move. In classical Arabic the word named a caravan or a band of travelers, and it appears in that sense in the Quran. Modern Arabic reassigned it to the automobile, the machine that travels constantly. The pattern faʿʿāla marks an intensive doer, so the word reads roughly as the constant mover.
