Etymology

عَمِل comes from the Semitic root ʿ-m-l, which carries the sense of doing, making, and labor. The same root gives Hebrew ʿāmāl, meaning toil or trouble, and related forms in Aramaic. Arabic kept the plain sense of working alongside the older notion of hard effort. The word is purely Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
