Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root س-ل-ك (s-l-k), which means to travel a road or follow a course. The noun sulūk is a verbal noun on the fuʿūl pattern. Its original sense of taking a path was extended to the path a person follows in life, that is, their conduct.
