The word entered Arabic in the early twentieth century as a direct borrowing from French cinéma, itself a shortening of cinématographe. That French term was coined from Greek kinema, meaning movement, plus graphein, to write or record. Arabic kept the foreign shape almost unchanged, which is why the word does not follow normal Arabic case endings.
