Etymology

Fustān entered Arabic as a loanword meaning a woman's dress or gown. It came through Ottoman Turkish fistan and Greek phoustani, which trace back to Italian fustagno, the term for a sturdy cotton-linen cloth known in English as fustian. Some scholars connect fustian itself to Fustat, the medieval name for Old Cairo, where the cloth was reportedly made and traded. If that link is correct, the word made a round trip: an Arabic place name shaped a European fabric term, which later returned to Arabic as the word for the finished garment.
