Etymology

The word comes from the root ز-و-ج, which carries the sense of pairing or joining. Arabic زوج (zawj, "pair, spouse") is generally traced through Aramaic to Greek ζεῦγος (zeugos, "yoke, pair"). مزدوج is the Form VIII active participle built on this root, where the infix ت assimilates to د after the voiced ز, giving muzdawij rather than muztawij.
