Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ش ح ن (sh-ḥ-n), which means to load, to freight, or to charge. شاحِنة is the feminine active participle of the verb شَحَنَ, so it literally names the thing that does the loading. Modern Arabic fixed the term on the road vehicle that hauls cargo.
