Etymology

Arabic صابون is a loanword, most likely borrowed through Aramaic from Latin sapo, the same word that gave English 'soap' and French 'savon'. Latin sapo itself is thought to come from a Germanic word for a reddish hair dye or pomade made from fat and ash. Once in Arabic, the word settled into the noun pattern فاعول and produced its own family of derived forms, such as صابونة for a single bar and مصبنة for a soap factory.
