Etymology
Ḍayyiq comes from the triliteral Semitic root ḍ-y-q, which carries the core sense of narrowness, tightness, and by extension distress. The word follows a pattern used for hollow roots, where the weak middle radical is doubled to form an intensive adjective, the same pattern seen in mayyit (dead) or layyin (soft). From the same root Arabic also derives ḍāqa (to become narrow or tight) and maḍīq (a strait).
