ضَيْف comes from the Semitic root ḍ-y-f, which carries the idea of turning aside to lodge with someone. The related verb ضَافَ once meant to incline toward or to stop over at a place. From the same root grow ضِيَافَة, hospitality, and مُضِيف, host. The word is native Semitic and has no Indo-European ancestry.
