Etymology

مُضِيف comes from the Arabic root ض-ي-ف (ḍ-y-f), which carries the idea of a guest and the hospitality owed to one. The verb أَضَافَ (Form IV) means both to host a guest and to add something, since taking someone in is treated as adding them to your household. مُضِيف is the active participle of that verb, so it literally means the one who hosts or adds.
