Etymology
جَرْي is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the Form I verb جَرَى (jarā), built on the triliteral Semitic root ج-ر-ي. The root covers physical motion, a person or animal running, water flowing, and it extends to abstract occurrence, as in events running their course. This is a native Semitic root, not one traced back to Proto-Indo-European.
