جَرَى is a native Arabic verb built on the triliteral root ج-ر-ي, which carries the sense of running and flowing. From the literal flow of water it extended to events that run their course, giving the meaning "to happen." The same root yields مَجْرَى, a watercourse or channel, and the active participle جارٍ, meaning current or ongoing.
