Etymology
صَوْت comes from the Semitic triliteral root ṣ-w-t, which carries the sense of making a sound or calling out. Classical Arabic used it for any audible sound and for the human voice in particular. Modern Arabic added a political sense: the vote a citizen gives at the ballot box. The plural is أَصْوَات.
