Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Arabic root غ-د-ر. In form I the root carries the sense of breaking faith or abandoning a duty, hence غَدَرَ, to betray. The form III pattern فاعَلَ shifts the meaning to a plain physical one: to leave a place, to depart. The related noun غَدير, a pool, names the water left behind after a flood.
