Etymology
Rِواق comes from the Arabic root ر-و-ق, tied to the verb raaqa, meaning to be clear or pleasing. The word first named the front flap or awning of a tent, the open, clear space before its interior. Usage widened over time to mean a colonnade, portico, or hall, especially the teaching halls that ring the courtyard of a mosque or madrasa. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so this word has no Proto-Indo-European root or Indo-European cognates.
