Etymology

Fakhr comes from the Semitic root f-kh-r, built around the core sense of boasting or taking pride. The word is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the verb fakhara, to boast or glory in something. In classical Arabic literary criticism, fakhr also names a whole poetic genre devoted to self-praise, standing alongside satire, elegy, and love poetry as one of the standard themes a poet could take up.
