Etymology

مَوْلِد comes from the Semitic root و-ل-د (w-l-d), meaning to give birth or beget, a root shared across the Semitic language family. The word itself is a noun of place and time built with the prefix مَ- on that root, so it literally names the place or moment of birth. Over time it narrowed to two specific senses: a person's birthplace, and the annual commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birth, later extended to local Egyptian saint's-day festivals.
