Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root n-q-ṣ, which carries the core sense of shortfall or reduction across its derived forms. Arabic built an entire family from it, covering the noun for a shortage, the adjective for something incomplete, and verbs for gradual dwindling or deliberate reduction. The root shows up often in the Quran and classical texts paired with its opposite, zāda, to increase.
