Etymology
آخِذ is the active participle of the verb أَخَذَ, 'to take.' Its root, أ-خ-ذ, is shared across the Semitic languages and carries the sense of taking, seizing, or grasping. The same root surfaces in Akkadian aḫāzu and Hebrew אָחַז, both meaning to seize or hold. The initial hamza plus the long vowel of the فاعِل pattern contract into the written madda آ.
