Etymology
ضاع comes from the Semitic triliteral root ض-ي-ع, which carries the ideas of loss, waste, and ruin. It is a hollow verb: the weak middle radical surfaces as a long ā in the past tense and as ī in the present, يَضِيع. The same root produces the noun ضياع, meaning loss, and the Form II verb ضيّع, meaning to lose or squander something.
