Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root sh-r-ḥ, whose base sense is to cut open or lay a thing flat and open. From laying something open grew the figurative sense of opening up a subject, that is, explaining it. Classical Arabic kept the physical meaning too, as in slicing meat into thin strips.
