Etymology
جِيرِيّ is the relative adjective formed from جِير, the Arabic word for lime or quicklime, plus the nisba suffix ـِيّ. جِير is an old Semitic word for chalk and lime; Hebrew גִּיר and Aramaic gīrā carry the same sense. The adjective means made of or containing lime, and it is the standard term in Arabic geology for calcareous rock and soil.
