Word family
Etymology
The verb is Form II of the Semitic root ʿ-b-r, whose base sense is to cross or pass over. Form II adds a causative force, so the idea shifts to making meaning cross from the mind to the outside. The same root gives the verb for interpreting a dream, that is, carrying its hidden sense over to the waking world.
