The verb comes from the Semitic root ع-ل-ق (ʿ-l-q), which carries the sense of clinging, hanging, and attachment. The base verb عَلِقَ means to cling or stick to something. عَلَّق is the Form II (فعّل) causative: to make something hang or cling, and by extension to attach a remark to a matter, that is, to comment.
